» Commencement and the Best Bar in the World

[01:45 PM]

Having Commencment a month into university is odd. It feels like a gigantic step backwards, but at the same time, it will be nice to see everyone again and talk about how school's going and such--except a bunch of people aren't coming back because they're really far away and they have classes on Friday morning.

In the end, Commencement on a Thursday night a month after unviersity starts is a BAD idea. Bastards.

In other news, I went to the best kind of bar today: A MASHED POTATO BAR! It was right beside the salad bar at lunch. YUMMAY!! I need to stop eating disgustingly large portions three times a day and then snacking inbetween. I've gained three pounds since I've been here and I haven't even touched ice cream (we have an all-you-can-eat ice cream bar, too).

» Lessons

[09:08 PM]

I've been here at St. Hilda's (my rez, a.k.a. SHC) for almost a month, and today was the start of my third week of classes. I have learned some very important lessons (the hard way; I don't think one truly learns any other way):

  • Books are expensive. I've spent just under $700 on the "required" books for my courses, a lot of which I bought used.
  • Booze is expensive, especially at bars and parties. Predrinking is the economical way.
  • Being drunk every night for one week straight (minus one evening where I went to a training clinic) is bad not only for your liver but for your brain as well. I swear, I'm having issues focusing (thinking, as opposed to seeing) now. It wasn't so bad during Frosh Week (no classes) and Initiation Week (tons of administrative bs), but never again will I do that during a normal week of class.
  • Drugs are really bad (unless you are taking them in prescribed doses); they are worse than alcohol.
  • DON'T SKIP TWO HOUR LECTURES! If you must (as in my case), at least bother to read the syllabus so that you can stay caught up on readings instead of cramming two weeks worth of reading into the night before.
  • IT'S TRUE: Trin is the party school to end all party schools. >=)

I get a kick out of Jamie Cullum!

    Oct. 19, 2004 @ The Phoenix.

    Slight problem: it's a 19+ show. =S

    __________________________________________________

Monday was the Humbling: we went to all the other colleges at 10pm and apologized for being better (?!). Then we went to Einstien's (on College) and became inebriated.

Tuesday: I went to some training clinic thing for work and missed my night class (POL 103).

Wednesday was really crazy. High table, Lit debate, pub night. At 2am (Thursday morning) the fire alarms went off in Trin and so everyone evacuated (read: stumbled, passed out) into the Quad. It was kind of surreal.

Thursday was less crazy, but still entertaining. There was a rodeo-themed party and more drunkenness ensued.

I don't think it's ever been as quiet as it was this weekend since I moved in. A lot of people went home for the weekend and I suppose everyone else (myself included) decided that it was about time to get cracking. I have OOODLES of work to do, and it most definitely sucks, but hey, that's school! =)

Friday was quiet: I bought the coolest Radiohead poster at the Imaginus sale (the OK Computer one!). There was a party somewhere but we had a Sex and the City night instead. I've never watched it before, so I wasn't sure what to expect but I thought it was pretty funny. We got about halfway through season 1.

Yesterday I woke up disgustingly early (7am) to go out to the east end for some training for work (after which I decided I no longer want the job). Then I came back, went swimming at Hart House (muchos funnos!) and then Alex came over to visit and we hung out. Then I did some work, got dinner at 11pm or so (Swiss Chalet baby!). On the way bcck I ran into Brian and so we called Will and decided to watch Fight Club (which is unbelievably cool). Then we went to the kitchen to find food, but instead we found Christina and Mandeep giving Sirika a makeover. We hung out in the kitchen for a looong time and then we went over to Will's because they wanted to see Trin rooms.

Today I woke up and I've been doing work. And I had lunch. And before you know it it's a quarter after 4. Six Feet Under night tonight (thanks Steve!), WOOT!

I think there's a bug going around my floor because a bunch of us are kinda sick. =(

    » I <3 My Roomie!

    [05:23 PM]

We had a false alarm this morning at 7am. I was so tired that I didn't even hear it, but Laura woke me up. Had I been in a single room and had there really been a fire, I probably would be dead right now.

    I'm still decorating my room:

    I need Star Trek posters!

    Escher's "Relativity."

I'm gradually adjusting to university life. I didn't think I'd have such a hard time sitting down and doing work, but I do. Half the time my room is in sucha disarray that I have to just drop everything and clean up and by the time I'm done that, it's probably dinner time anyway. After dinner, shit ALWAYS goes on (every night is like a weekend here!) and so work never gets done.

That is why I must end this entry now, not because I don't have anything to say (I have TONS!!!) but because I need to get cracking. Au revoir, à bientôt!

I switched and I LOVE it. It's lean, mean, and tabbed. The only downside is that in MT, the little buttons for bold, underline, italicize, URL, etc, aren't there anymore, but that's okay because I rarely used them.

    You should switch, too!

    » Initiation Week

    [10:23 PM]

So far I have been to three days worth of classes. It's not bad at all. I don't mind it too much. I'm kinda worried about French (they made me switch from FSL 121 to FSL 161) but other than that I quite like university in general. Oh and another thing: books are FUCKING expensive!

I LOVE MY COLLEGE! Everyone complains about how U of T is gigantic and you're "just a number" and all of that, but I think being in a small, tight-knit college really helps. For example, today I switched into a different French class (161 instead of 121) and there were a few peopel that I knew (from Trinity). Then we went back to Strachan for lunch and ate with a bunch of people. It turns out we're all in the same history class at 2 so we all went together and took up a whole row in the back. I love how I can walk into the Quad and actually KNOW people and say hi and talk for a bit. Living in residence helps a lot too. I haven't seen some non-rez people since the end of Frosh Week. I'd be kinda sad if I were them. Another thing I really like is how the upperyears are superfreakingubernice. I didn't really expect it. I also didn't expect enjoying living in an all-girls residence, but I actually do. It doesn't feel segregated or anything just because the guys come over and we go over to Trinity, too.

And the best part about Trin: it's a fucking party. The whole fucking thing is a fucking party. I FUCKING LOVE IT! =)

    [09:34 PM]

Holy fuck, Frosh Week has been INSANE.

The party on the first night was dry in more ways than one, but the rest of the week was fucking awesome. They're really lax on the drinking thing here at Trin (I hear it's not the case at UW, UWO, and Queen's among most other schools). I've been going back to rez with my roomie at like 4 or 5 in the morning drunk off our asses every night.

On Friday we went to Camp Wanakita. It was cool. We spent the whole day on the beach/lake (I canoed and kayaked all day!) and then at dinner, 0T7 stormed in and started screaming at us in facepaint and their t-shirts that said (in latin) something about a drunken seagull. Initiation had begun! We'd all signed waivers earlier in the day. I was pissed because I'd not had a scrap of food to eat yet; I'd just sat down with my plate.

We put skits together. My group's was the best because all the other groups rehashed the Salterrae and we made a real skit. Then they locked us up in our cabins and then at midnight the pulled all the guys out and did their initiation. I'm not sure exactly what went on but I hear it was at the lake or something. Then they got deported to various university campuses and pulled pranks (click thumbnails).

It was absolutely surreal. You try lying in your bunk at 1 in the morning listening to Slayer and Pantera and a bunch of guys chant the Salterrae. I was about to shit my pants. (Ally: and I thought UW Eng was cultish!)

The girls didn't get deported (I was quite disappointed but it's a big security thing and I guess I understand that) but we had a corn syrup and oatmeal mixture smeared all over us as we ran laps in a field, rolled around, did the wheelbarrow thing, jumping jacks, sang the "Virginity Song" (it was stuck in my head all the way home, haha!) and proposed to the upperyear guys. That lasted for 45 minutes or so. It was so fucking cool.

    » HURRAH FOR OLD TRINITY!

    [09:42 PM]

My first entry from rez. High speed is hawt. :)

I actually ended up moving in on Sunday, a day early, to beat the insane rush. 'Twas a wise decision indeed.

Frosh week is overrated, but still fun. Basically they drill us about how great Trinity is and how we're "the best of the best." My ego loves it. My roomate, Laura, is a cool cat, so that makes everything more fun!

My room (I'm in St. Hilda's College, the girls' residence at Trinity) is pretty nice. I'm not quite done decorating yet, but here's a look anyway.

That's John Rzeznik behind the desk lamp. It was a picture I took at the show at the Hershey Centre on June 4, 2002. The fireplace is fake (I think it used to work, but it doesn't anymore) and on the right, hiding behind a shelf beside the dresser. I need to get more posters and I've put up a hangy thing since I took the picture. And lotsa stuff on my bulliten board.

I've yet to e-mail everyone with my mailing address and phone number and I'm going to switch my e-mail too (hotmail sucks!) so keep an eye on your inbox.

    [04:12 PM]

I'm considering moving out early. I called St. Hilda's today and they said I can move in anytime. Maybe I'll go pick up my keys tomorrow, check out the room, and move in on Saturday or Sunday to beat the insane rush on Monday.

I'm done packing. Waiting on a load or two of laundry and about 15 cds left to rip. I really want my red (faux) crocodile skin glasses case back from Cathy.

» Don't Flirt with Lifeguards: It'll Cost You a Stoplight

    [09:50 AM]

Yesterday was my last day of work. Jamie and I scored a stoplight.

It all started when Jamie and I were lounging around on deck reading the paper, when an police officer came up to us. We chitchat for a bit. He's on "pave duty," they were changing the stoplights at a small intersection near our pool.

We go for lunch and talk to him some more. When we came back, we saw the old stoplight lying on the ground. Jamie asked if she can have it, and the construction worker was like "I guess... why do you want it?" And Jamie was like "For my apartment!" and so we got the stoplight. It was really funny, because I asked the officer if it was legal and he's like, "... Not really." I kinda wanted the other one, but I'm pretty sure my mom would've freaked and not let me bring it to rez.

    The trunk.

    The trunk and the stoplight.

Then there was another incident a week or so ago.

Jamie and I were driving back to the pool after lunch in our bikini tops because it was insanely hot that day. We stopped at a light and we decided to take some pictures. Then, this big truck from Toronto Works and Emergency Services stops beside us and the guys start hooting and cheering. It was HILARIOUS! We tooks pictures of them, too.

Myself and Jamie: Scandalous and Dangerous!
